V-line
V-line surgery is the more commonly known terminology for when angular jaw correction and genioplasty are performed together. An overdeveloped or asymmetrical lower jaw makes one’s image looks rough. V-line surgery is not simply shaving off large portions of the jawbone—it is taking the proportions, shape, and length of the jaw and chin to create a natural-looking, defined, and balanced jawline.
Process of v-line surgery
- Long Curve Mandibular Osteotomy The jaw can appear strong and square-like due to the angle of the mandibular bone, also known as the lower jaw. The jawbone below the ear is smoothly shaved and reduced to create a slender jawline side profile
- Cortical Bone Osteotomy Cortical bone is jaw bone’s outer layer. A thick cortical bone can cause the face to appear larger and wider. Trimming the outer area can form a balanced jawline and smaller front profile
- Chin Osteotomy An osteotomy (shape will be adjusted to each patient’s case) is performed below the nerve line. Excess bone will be removed if chin reduction is necessary or realigned if chin advancement is necessary
- Masseter Muscle Reduction The masseter muscle that surrounds the jawbone becomes over-developed from chewing or grinding the teeth. By permanently reducing the muscle, the jawline becomes soft and smooth
- Buccal Pad Removal Fat accumulating around the jaw can cause a square or chubby look. Without using any invasive procedures: laser liposuction can dissolve the fat to form a slimmer-looking face
What is the difference with Mini V-line?
For those who only need slight jaw trimming, mini v-line surgery will be adequate to create the v-line you desire. Mandibular osteotomy, cortical bone osteotomy, masseter muscle reduction, and buccal pad removal are not performed for mini v-line surgery.
