Top Attractions in Jeju Island

Udo- What is Udo? It literally translates to Cow Island, with “u” meaning “cow” in the Korean Chinese alphabet. The name comes from the outline of the island, which resembles a cow lying down or the top of a cow’s head. Scientifically speaking, Udo is a lava plateau which means it was formed by basaltic lava after numerous eruptions. There’s a sea cave under Udobong (Udo’s Peak), a white sand beach with multi-blue water, and you can also see the night lights from fishing boats.

Manjanggul Cave- Is one of the finest lava tunnels in the world and a natural heritage site. It is a unique cave in which the lava flowed through, forming it into the cave. Lights within the cave illuminate its natural features and beauty. The section of the tube is open to the public and is about 1km long, which can be completed in about an hour.

Hamdeok Beach- This is an excellent beach filled with restaurants, coffee shops, and waterfronts. It is perhaps the most popular beach in Jeju and is definitely worth a visit as you can relax and enjoy the scenery. It is great for families but could get crowded. The beach is clean and has pristine waters and black rocks. If you go during March, you will see flowers on the hill blooming with yellow and purple colors. There is a connected path to a hill which allows for some decent small hikes and breathtaking views for some photography. The air is fresh, and the walk is quite tranquil.

Bijarim Forest- The forest area is quite small and walkable in about a half hour. It is one of the most relaxing forests to visit. Once you go inside, you will feel isolated and alone, surrounded by nature. All your senses come alive, and a feeling of calm and peace resides in you.

Hyeopjae Beach- This beach is relatively clean and has many selections of food facilities. The sand is white and combined with the clear sky water; it is a beautiful beach to visit. There are shops and restaurants close by, and toilet blocks with flowing water to wash off the sand. It has shallow water for snorkeling, and the lava rocks add to the beauty of this place.

Dongmun Market- The market has plentiful and affordable fresh meat, seafood, as well as Jeju-only snacks and beverages. You can find great souvenirs, dried food, and chocolates. Everything is locally sourced, including the “catch”. Jeju is known for its famous oranges and is extremely popular for its delicious taste.
