What is plastic surgery? According to Wikipedia, “Plastic surgery is a surgical specialty involving the restoration, reconstruction or alteration of the human body.” South Korea performs the most plastic surgeries per capita in the world and currently performs 24% of all cometic surgeries, attracting many foreigners annually. The medical tourism in Korea attracts people from all over the world such as China, Russia, Singapore & US. Gangnam district in Seoul has over 500 clinics that offer cosmetic surgery services. The five most common cosmetic surgeries performed in Korea is double eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, jaw reduction, face lift and breast augmentation. Due to Korea’s advanced medical field, cutting edge technology and competitive prices the growing demand continues to rise.


So why do many people get plastic surgery? Many believe that having plastic surgery will improve their appearance and raise self-esteem. Choices to get plastic surgery is motivated by several factors but underlaying theme aims for the pursuit of happiness. Whether to gain a competitive edge in love, finances or restore youth, people seek out cosmetic surgery to enhance and improve their current situation. With the growing popularity, plastic surgery has become widely acceptable and normalized to solving one’s dissatisfaction of body image. The beauty standard in Korea is exceptionally high compared to most countries, and those that live in this culture feel the immense pressure to look a certain way in order to get ahead. Appearance plays a big role in Korean culture and other influencing factors such as K-pop idols or celebrities, make an impact on deciding to alter one’s look.
